Kitchen science: Shaking smashes the tiny blobs of fat in cream together until they stick into one big lump of butter, and the watery buttermilk is left over.
Butter in a Jar for kids: the whole recipe
Shake-It Butter! We shake cream until it gives up and turns into butter. Shake, shake! This easy no-cook recipe is for ages 5 to 9 (grades K–3rd), takes about 15 minutes and serves 4. Crumb, our tiny chef, reads every step aloud with a picture, so a child can follow along.
Ingredients
1 cup whipping cream
a pinch salt
8 round crackers (or gluten-free crackers)
Tools
A clean jar with a tight lid, A mixing bowl, A big spoon, A butter knife, A plate, Measuring cups.
Steps
Wash your hands with soap for twenty seconds, then let's make Shake-It Butter!
Pour 1 cup of whipping cream into your jar.
Add a pinch of a pinch of salt.
Screw the lid on TIGHT.
Shake, shake, shake! Take turns when your arms get tired.
Keep going. It gets thick like whipped cream, then goes quiet.
Keep shaking. A yellow lump of butter appears!
Pour the thin buttermilk into a cup. Keep the butter lump in the jar.
Scoop the butter into a bowl and press it with a spoon to squeeze out the last drops.
Spread your butter on 8 round crackers with a blunt knife, and taste it. You made that!
Safety notes
Contains milk, wheat. Tap "Allergies?" on the Kitchen's front page and the swaps fill themselves in where there is one.
Read the label on packets for allergies.
A bit messy.

Make it your own
Stir a pinch of cinnamon and a little sugar into your butter for cinnamon butter.
Spread it on a banana coin or a warm slice of bread instead of a cracker.
Press your butter into a little cup and chill it, then it's firm enough to slice.
