Kitchen science: Chia seeds soak up water and grow a jelly coat, so the pudding sets without any cooking.
Chia Pudding for kids: the whole recipe
Frogspawn Pudding! Every seed wears a jelly coat, just like frog eggs. Ribbit! This easy no-cook recipe is for ages 5 to 9 (grades K–3rd), takes about 10 minutes (plus 4 hours waiting) and serves 2. Crumb, our tiny chef, reads every step aloud with a picture, so a child can follow along.
Ingredients
¼ cup chia seeds
1 cup milk (or oat milk)
1 tablespoon maple syrup
½ teaspoon vanilla
1 kiwi
¼ cup blueberries
Tools
A clean jar with a tight lid, Measuring cups, Measuring spoons, A big spoon, A cutting board, A sharp knife (grown-up).
Steps
Wash your hands with soap for twenty seconds, then let's make Frogspawn Pudding!
Spoon ¼ cup of chia seeds into your jar.
Pour in 1 cup of milk.
Add 1 tablespoon of maple syrup and ½ teaspoon of vanilla.
Stir it really well with a spoon.
Wait 5 minutes, then stir it AGAIN.
Put the lid on and tuck the jar in the fridge for a good night's sleep.
Good morning! Look: every seed has a jelly coat, like frog eggs.
Grown-up step: A grown-up cuts the 1 kiwi into thin round slices.
Lay a kiwi slice on top. That's the lily pad!
Drop ¼ cup of blueberries on top. Look, tadpoles! They're swimming!
Safety notes
Sharp! A grown-up does this part.
Contains milk. Tap "Allergies?" on the Kitchen's front page and the swaps fill themselves in where there is one.
Chia seeds swell up when they're wet, so they must soak first: never dry spoonfuls for little ones.
Squash blueberries a little for little ones under 4.
