Kitchen science: A clementine is made of segments packed together, which is why a peeled one has ridges like a real pumpkin.

Clementine Pumpkins for kids: the whole recipe

Let's make a patch of tiny pumpkins you can peel and eat! This easy Halloween treat is for ages 5 to 9 (grades Kโ€“3rd), takes about 10 minutes and serves 2. Crumb, our tiny chef, reads every step aloud with a picture, so a child can follow along.

Ingredients

  • 4 clementines
  • 1 stick of celery

Tools

A cutting board, A sharp knife (grown-up), A plate.

Steps

  1. Wash your hands with soap for twenty seconds.
  2. Peel 4 clementines all the way round, slowly.
  3. Grown-up step: A grown-up cuts 1 stick of celery into tiny sticks, as short as your fingernail.
  4. Poke a celery stick into the top of each one: a pumpkin stem!
  5. Pull one apart and count the pieces inside: is it 8? 10? More?
  6. Line them up on a plate: a pumpkin patch! Now eat your patch.

Safety notes

  • Sharp! A grown-up does this part.
  • None of the nine major allergens as written. Still read the labels on packets.
  • Raw celery is hard to chew for little ones under 4: cut it thin.

Kitchen science

A clementine is made of segments packed together, which is why a peeled one has ridges like a real pumpkin.

Make it your own

  • Draw a jack-o'-lantern face on the peel with a food-safe marker, then peel it.
  • Add a little mint leaf beside each stem.
  • Make a pumpkin patch on green grass: kiwi slices underneath.
