Snail Roll-Ups for kids: the whole recipe

Snails are slow, but these ones are ready in fifteen minutes. That's fast for a snail! This easy no-cook recipe is for ages 5 to 9 (grades K–3rd), takes about 15 minutes and serves 2. Crumb, our tiny chef, reads every step aloud with a picture, so a child can follow along.

Ingredients

  • 2 tortillas
  • ¼ cup cream cheese
  • 2 tablespoons strawberry jam
  • 8 grapes
  • 16 pretzel sticks (or gluten-free pretzel sticks)
  • 16 candy eyes (optional)

Tools

A plate, A cutting board, A butter knife, A sharp knife (grown-up).

Steps

  1. Wash your hands with soap for twenty seconds.
  2. Spread ¼ cup of cream cheese over 2 tortillas laid flat on a plate, right to the edge.
  3. Smear 2 tablespoons of strawberry jam on top of the cream cheese.
  4. Roll each tortilla up tight, like a sleeping bag.
  5. Grown-up step: A grown-up cuts each roll into four thick wheels with a sharp knife.
  6. Stand a wheel on your plate, swirl facing you. That's the shell!
  7. Push a grape against the shell for the snail's head.
  8. Poke 16 pretzel sticks into the grapes, two on each head, for antennae.
  9. Press 16 candy eyes onto the grapes, two on each head.
  10. Make a snail from every wheel. Look, they're sliding!
