Kitchen science: A cup works like a cookie cutter: its thin edge presses through soft bread, and the cream cheese between the slices sticks the sandwich together.
Turtle Sandwich for kids: the whole recipe
Let's turn a sandwich into a turtle that peeks out of its shell! This easy no-cook recipe is for ages 5 to 10 (grades K–4th), takes about 15 minutes and serves 2. Crumb, our tiny chef, reads every step aloud with a picture, so a child can follow along.
Ingredients
4 slices of bread (or gluten-free bread)
4 tablespoons cream cheese
1 cucumber
6 grapes
1 handful raisins
Tools
A butter knife, Cups or glasses, A cutting board, A sharp knife (grown-up), A plate.
Steps
Wash your hands with soap for twenty seconds.
Spread 4 tablespoons of cream cheese on half of 4 slices of bread, then press the others on top.
Press a cup down hard on each sandwich and twist. A round shell!
Grown-up step: A grown-up slices 1 cucumber into thin coins and cuts 6 grapes in half.
Lay grape halves on the shell for spots, cut side down.
Tuck a cucumber coin under the front for a head, and four under the sides for feet.
Press two raisins on the head for eyes.
Your turtle is ready! Watch it peek out of its shell.
Safety notes
Sharp! A grown-up does this part.
Contains milk, wheat. Tap "Allergies?" on the Kitchen's front page and the swaps fill themselves in where there is one.
Cut grapes in half the long way for little ones under 4.
Read the label on packets for allergies.

Make it your own
Make the turtle on a toasted bagel instead of a sandwich.
Use a different spread: sunflower seed butter makes a brown, nutty turtle.
Make a whole family: one big turtle and little ones cut with a smaller cup.
