Planets in Order from the Sun
The eight planets in order from the Sun are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. That is NASA's list, checked 29 October 2026. Pluto is a dwarf planet, so it is not on it. Tap a planet to read about it, or print the strip for the wall.
- Planet 1Mercury57.9 million km from the Sun
- Planet 2Venus108.2 million km from the Sun
- Planet 3Earth149.6 million km from the Sun
- Planet 4Mars228 million km from the Sun
- Planet 5Jupiter778.5 million km from the Sun
- Planet 6Saturn1432 million km from the Sun
- Planet 7Uranus2867 million km from the Sun

The planets in size order
Biggest to smallest across, by NASA's fact sheets: Jupiter (142,984 km), Saturn (120,536 km), Uranus (51,118 km), Neptune (49,528 km), Earth (12,756 km), Venus (12,104 km), Mars (6,792 km), Mercury (4,879 km). Jupiter is more than eleven Earths wide; Mercury is only a little wider than our Moon. To feel the sizes and the distances together, walk them: Planet Walk shrinks the solar system to fit a street.
A trick to remember the order
Make a sentence whose words start with M, V, E, M, J, S, U and N, the planets' first letters from the Sun outward. A popular one is “My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming.” Better still, make up your own: a silly sentence you wrote yourself is the easiest to remember. Then check it with the planets in order quiz.
Why is Pluto not on the list?
Pluto was counted as the ninth planet until 2006, when the International Astronomical Union named a new group, dwarf planets. Pluto is smaller than Earth's Moon and shares its part of space with many icy bodies. Read about Pluto.
