Our oldest animal friend, in every size from tiny to giant.

A dog is a pet that lives with people. Dogs wag their tails when they are happy. They love to sniff, run and play.

Dogs came from wolves long, long ago, when people and wolves began to live side by side. Today there are big dogs, tiny dogs, fluffy dogs and smooth dogs, but they are all one kind of animal. A dog's nose is far better than ours, so it learns about the world by sniffing.

All pet dogs belong to one species, from a giant dog to a pocket-sized one. People bred them over a very long time for different jobs: herding sheep, pulling sleds, guarding homes and keeping people company. A dog's nose has far more smell sensors than a person's, which is why dogs help find lost people. The sizes on this page are for the sled dogs of Denali National Park, because pet dogs come in every size.
