How Compare Two works
Each animal is drawn from the side, like a page in a field guide, and scaled by its real length (or its height, for a giraffe or a penguin). Both stand on one ground line beside our measuring child, so you can see that a giraffe is several of her. When one animal is more than twenty-five times the size of the other, Pip the pangolin holds up a magnifier so the small one doesn’t vanish.
Under the picture are five rows: top speed, weight, how long it lives, what it eats and where it lives. The bigger number wears a star, and a short line says what it means. Every number has a small mark that takes you to the page it came from and the day it was checked. If no page we trust gives a number, the row says so.
Then you can race them. We only race. Real animals mostly avoid each other. The race is by top speed only, over a short dash; the page says when one animal is swimming and the other running.
357 pairs have their own pages, and any two animals make one. All the animals · For grown-ups
