Kitchen science: Crescent dough puffs up in the oven because thin layers of fat inside it melt and make steam that pushes the layers apart.

Mummy Dogs for kids: the whole recipe

Let's wrap hot dogs in dough bandages and bake a row of friendly mummies! This easy Halloween treat is for ages 6 to 11 (grades 1st–5th), takes about 30 minutes and serves 4. Crumb, our tiny chef, reads every step aloud with a picture, so a child can follow along, and every hot or sharp step is marked for a grown-up.

Ingredients

  • 1 tube of crescent dough
  • 4 hot dogs
  • 1 teaspoon mustard (optional)

Tools

A cutting board, A butter knife, A baking tray, Baking paper, The oven (grown-up), Oven mitts, A plate.

Steps

  1. Wash your hands with soap for twenty seconds.
  2. Grown-up step: A grown-up heats the oven to 375Β°F and lines a tray with baking paper.
  3. Unroll 1 tube of crescent dough on a board and pinch the lines shut.
  4. Cut the dough into thin strips with a butter knife.
  5. Wrap the strips round 4 hot dogs like bandages. Leave a gap near one end for a face.
  6. Wash your hands again: raw dough and hot dogs aren't for licking.
  7. Lay the mummies on the tray with space between them.
  8. Grown-up step: A grown-up bakes them 12 to 15 minutes, till the dough is golden.
  9. Grown-up step: A grown-up takes them out with mitts on. Cool for 5 minutes.
  10. Use 1 teaspoon of mustard to dot two eyes in each face gap.
  11. Line up your mummy family and say BOO! Then munch.
