Top 15 realistic fiction books for kids ages 6 to 13

Realistic fiction covers school, family, friends and the hard parts of growing up. The list starts with first-chapter-book friendships and ends with novels about grief and difference. Several are the books teachers read aloud, and they work well with a parent.

Titles were chosen from award winners, ALSC notable lists and long-running library favorites, then each title and author was checked against Open Library in Oct 2026. Checked 2026-10-25.
