Tools for children who struggle to decode
Children who find reading hard, including many with dyslexia, usually need explicit, step-by-step phonics practice rather than guessing from pictures. The U.S. What Works Clearinghouse practice guide on foundational reading skills (K-3) recommends teaching letter sounds, decoding and word study explicitly. These tools fit that approach, but a trained teacher or specialist matters more than any product.
Products were taken from Lakeshore Learning's category pages (Oct 2026); the approach follows the IES What Works Clearinghouse K-3 foundational reading practice guide, checked Oct 2026.
