The first four are puzzles of one kind or another: falling blocks, words on blocks, a science choice at every build, and orders to match. The last, Build World, is a building game, and building games are not puzzles at all: there is no puzzle to solve, only a world to make. Each one asks a question as you play, math or reading in four of them and science in Stone Age, starting easy enough for kindergarten and following the grade your child picks.
Every other game is in the arcade. A Just play mode in each game turns the questions off. We leave the arcade's battle and aiming games, such as Sniper and Invasion, off lists like this one on purpose.
Puzzles without a screen of their own
The Activity Book is printable and plays on screen too, with a pencil to draw with. Its Puzzle Lab holds move-limited logic puzzles with the true fewest moves worked out for each one:
- Tilt Box: tilt the box so the balls roll out of the hole.
- Water Works: turn the pipes so the water reaches the flower.
- Traffic Jam: slide the cars out of the way and let the red car out.
- Sort the Fruit: move the fruit from basket to basket until each basket has one kind.
- Frog Hop: swap the green frogs and the red frogs, hopping one at a time.
- River Crossing: get everyone across the river, but who can be left alone?
For a quieter turn there are also a maze, a sudoku, a memory match and a word find.
How to choose a puzzle game for your child
- Age 4 to 6: Stone Age, where for kindergarten to second grade the choices are pictures and each question is read aloud with its answers, and Puzzle Lab's Tilt Box and Water Works.
- Age 5 to 7: Color Block on its gentle speed and the first layers of Deep Dig, from first sounds to short words like cat. The rules fit in one sentence, and a wrong answer costs nothing but a star or a moment.
- Age 7 and up: Potion Shop's Big words orders, Color Block's classic speed, the deeper Deep Dig layers and the harder Puzzle Lab sizes, where planning ahead beats trying everything.
- For calm: Build World in Artist mode, where every block is free and nothing can hurt you, and Stone Age, which has nothing to fight and no way to lose.
What each kind of puzzle builds
| Puzzle | What it builds |
|---|---|
| Falling blocks (Color Block) | Spatial sense: seeing how a shape turns and fits before it lands. |
| Science choices (Stone Age) | Guessing what will work, seeing what happens, then hearing why. |
| Matching orders (Potion Shop) | Careful reading: matching a written order to the right jar and label. |
| Move-limited logic (Puzzle Lab) | Planning several moves ahead and checking a plan against the rules. |
| Word puzzles (Deep Dig, word find) | Decoding words and spotting letter patterns. |
| Matching pairs (memory match) | Working memory: keeping track of where each card was. |
Questions parents ask
What are puzzle games for a 5 year old?
Games with a one-sentence rule where a wrong answer costs little: Color Block on its gentle speed, Stone Age and the first layers of Deep Dig on Peabody, and the first sizes of Puzzle Lab. The games start easy and follow the grade your child picks.
What is a cozy game?
A calm game with no losing and no one to beat. On Peabody, Build World in Artist mode (every block is free, nothing can hurt you, and you can fly) and Stone Age (nothing to fight and no way to lose) are the calmest. Build World is labeled a building game here, not a puzzle.
Do these puzzle games teach anything?
Yes. Each game asks a question as you play: math or reading in Color Block, Deep Dig, Potion Shop and Build World, such as counting, adding, first sounds and sight words, and science in Stone Age. The table says which. The questions follow the grade your child picks. A Just play mode turns them off.
Do they work on a phone, tablet or Chromebook?
Yes, in the browser, by touch or with a mouse. On a phone the games play sideways and fill the screen.
Are Peabody's puzzle games free?
Yes. They are free through the end of 2026, with no ads and no sign-up to start playing.
