Tangram puzzles for kids

Play a free tangram game for kids right here: drag the seven classic pieces into a dark shape, tap a piece to turn it, and press Hint when you are stuck. It starts with two pieces and builds up to all seven. There is no sign-up, no ad, nothing to download, no timer and nothing to type.

Tap a piece, then drag it into the dark shape.

Pieces snap to the dots. Turn goes an eighth of a turn at a time. Only the slanted box ever needs Flip.

How to play

  • Drag a piece onto the dark shape. When you let go it snaps to the nearest dot.
  • Turn a piece by tapping it again once it is picked, or with the Turn buttons. Each turn is an eighth of a turn.
  • Flip is for the slanted box (the parallelogram), the only piece that has a left-handed and a right-handed version.
  • Hint points at a piece and shows where it goes. Start over puts every piece back.
  • You are done when the pieces cover the whole shape with no gap and no piece lying on another. It does not matter which small triangle goes where.
  • It works with a finger, a stylus or a mouse, and with the arrow keys and R to turn if a keyboard is easier.

The seven pieces

PieceHow manyIts share of the whole square
Large triangle24 of 16 (a quarter each)
Medium triangle12 of 16 (an eighth)
Small triangle21 of 16 (a sixteenth each)
Square12 of 16 (an eighth)
Parallelogram (the slanted box)12 of 16 (an eighth)

Put all seven together and they make a square; the shapes in the game are other ways of putting the same seven pieces together.

Why kids like tangrams, and what they practise

  • Spatial reasoning. Seeing which piece fills a corner, and what it looks like turned, is the same skill behind reading maps and packing a lunch box.
  • Shape names and parts. Triangle, square, parallelogram, corner and side stop being words on a poster.
  • Fractions, quietly. Two small triangles cover one medium one, and two medium ones cover a large one, so a child sees halves and quarters with their hands.
  • Trying again. A shape that does not fit is not wrong; it is turned the wrong way. Hint is there so a child can keep going without a grown-up.

Questions parents and teachers ask

Is this tangram game free?

Yes. It is free through the end of 2026, with no ads and no sign-up.

What is a tangram?

A tangram is a puzzle of seven flat pieces, cut from a square, that fit together into many shapes. It is an old puzzle that began in China and spread around the world in the early 1800s.

What age is a tangram puzzle for?

Level 1 suits about 4 and up, because there are two pieces, the lines are drawn and nothing needs turning. Level 4, with all seven pieces and only an outline, is a real challenge for 8 and up, and adults get stuck too.

Can every puzzle be solved?

Yes. Each shape is made by putting the pieces together, and a test checks that they fit with no overlap and no gap. If a child is stuck, Hint shows the next piece.

Is there a timer or a score?

No. Nothing is timed and nothing is scored. A finished puzzle gets stars and a check mark on this device, and that is all.

Does it save anything about my child?

No. Nothing is typed and nothing is sent. The puzzles a child has finished are remembered in this browser only.

Does it work on a tablet, a phone or a Chromebook?

Yes, in the browser, with touch or a mouse. A tablet or a laptop gives the biggest pieces.
