Amira is a school reading program in English and Spanish. Students read aloud to an on-screen tutor that listens, helps when they get stuck, and scores fluency. Teachers get reading screeners (the former Istation ISIP tests), lesson plans built from the results, and one-to-one tutoring practice for each child. Districts and states buy it; families cannot sign up on their own and are told to ask their school.
Our take: Worth asking about if your child's school uses it; parents cannot buy it, so home users should look at family apps instead.
| Ages it suits | about 5-14 (school product; listed studies run from kindergarten to middle school) |
|---|---|
| What its terms say about age | Only educators can create accounts; students are enrolled by their school or district, which gives consent under COPPA's school exception. No public or family accounts. (terms) |
| Price | Through schools. School and district pricing, not public (Oct 2026). |

| The AI in it | Speech recognition listens to students read aloud, spots errors and skill gaps, and an automated tutor responds in the moment. |
What's good
- Hears students read aloud rather than only quizzing them
- English and Spanish
- Short default audio retention and no voiceprints
- More published research than most reading apps
Watch for
- Not available to families directly
- Records children's voices through the school
- Parents must go through the district to see or delete data
- Many studies are of predecessor Istation products
Data and privacy
Amira collects roster details and voice recordings; it says practice audio is not saved by default and test audio is deleted within 48 hours unless the district chooses to keep it longer. It says it does not train models directly on voice recordings, uses only de-identified data for training, does not sell student data, and works under FERPA and COPPA through districts. Read the privacy policy.
Does it work?
The maker lists seven studies it calls independent, including an ESSA Level II study in Louisiana and a Johns Hopkins study in South Carolina, plus many score-linking studies. Several listed studies cover Istation's ISIP tests and curriculum, which Amira now sells.
