10 AI reading apps and reading coaches for kids

The most useful AI for young readers is the kind that listens. Speech recognition tuned to kids' voices can now hear a child read aloud and catch the word they guessed, which used to need an adult sitting beside them. These apps are not a replacement for reading together, but they make independent practice count. We also list two well-loved reading apps that do not use AI, because sometimes the simple choice is the right one. Check microphone settings and where recordings go.

We favored apps that listen to real reading aloud, follow the science of reading, and are clear about price and data. Checked in October 2026; prices move. Checked 2026-10-24. Nobody paid to be here and nothing is an affiliate link.

  1. Ello

Ello · Free core; optional paid upgrade · Ages 5-9

Ello listens in real time as a child reads decodable books and steps in on the exact sound they missed. In 2026 the core reading and math activities are free.

Watch for: Microphone use; read the privacy policy on voice recordings.

  2. Read Along by Google

    Google · Free · Ages About 5-10

A friendly guide listens as kids read stories aloud, helps on tricky words and adds word games. Works offline once stories are downloaded, and has no ads.

Watch for: Android and web; also offered inside Google Classroom.

  3. Microsoft Reading Coach

Microsoft · Free with a Microsoft account · Ages About 6-13

Kids build a story from characters and settings they choose, AI writes it at their level, and the coach gives practice on the words they found hard. Can also use your own text.

  4. Amira

Amira Learning · Through schools and districts · Ages K-6

A reading tutor used by schools that listens to kids read in English or Spanish and gives feedback on the spot. Some districts and libraries offer it free for home use.

Watch for: Not sold to families; ask your school or library.

  5. Lalilo

    Renaissance · Through schools · Ages K-2

A phonics program for kindergarten to second grade that schools use, with speech recognition to check sounds and words read aloud. Ask your child's teacher; if the class uses it, home practice is usually included.

  6. Immersive Reader

Microsoft · Free · Ages All ages

Built into Edge, Word and OneNote. It reads text aloud, highlights each word, splits syllables and can show a picture for a word. Great for a child stuck on a hard page.

  7. Gemini Storybook

Google · Free · Ages Parent-run for young kids

Describe a story and Gemini makes a 10-page illustrated book with read-aloud narration, in 45+ languages. Fun for reluctant readers who want to read about their own idea.

Watch for: Google labels it an experiment; art can be strange. Read it together first.

  8. Speechify

    Speechify · Free tier; Premium about $139/year (Oct 2026) · Ages 10+

Turns any text, PDF or web page into natural-sounding audio with words highlighted. Helps older kids who can understand more than they can decode. Listening while reading along builds vocabulary.

Watch for: Frequent prompts to upgrade to the paid plan.

  9. Khan Academy Kids

    Khan Academy · Free · Ages 2-8

No generative AI here, and that is the point: a free, ad-free app with books, phonics and games for little kids, from a nonprofit. A calm choice for preschoolers.

  10. Epic

Epic · Subscription; free for teachers · Ages 12 and under

A large digital library of children's books, with read-to-me titles for early readers. Not an AI app; a useful pair with any of the listening coaches above.
