WeVideo

Desk research from the maker's own pages. Not yet tried by us. Checked 2026-10-24.

A browser-based video editor that many schools buy for class projects. Students edit with green screen, screen recording, templates and stock media, and can work on the same project together. Teachers assign projects through Google Classroom, Canvas or Schoology, add quiz questions inside videos, and keep sharing inside the class or school. Families can also use free or paid personal plans.

Our take: A solid choice for schools with Chromebooks that want managed video projects; a family on Apple devices will get more from free iMovie.

The AI in itAn "AI Assist" set of tools works on uploaded media and prompts; the maker says student data is kept out of AI features.

What's good

  • Runs in a browser, so it works on Chromebooks
  • Teacher controls and closed class sharing
  • Clear no-ads, no-AI-training promises for students
  • Works with Google Classroom, Canvas and Schoology

Watch for

  • Free plan is very limited (5 minutes, 480p)
  • Needs a steady internet connection
  • Schools can post student videos publicly with names
  • Pricing page lists two different classroom prices

Data and privacy

School accounts are controlled by the school; WeVideo says it has COPPA- and FERPA-compliant services, never shows students ads, does not share student data with third parties, and does not use personal data to train AI. Schools may choose to post student videos publicly with names. Read the privacy policy.

Does it work?

The maker shows an "ESSA Level IV" badge credited to Instructure's research team (2026) but links no study; no independent outcome studies found.
