The answers, and why

  1. Why do astronauts float on the space station? They are falling around Earth. The station and everyone in it are falling around Earth together, so nothing presses on the floor.
  2. How strong is gravity up where the space station flies? About 90 percent as strong as on the ground. NASA says gravity at the station's height is still about 90 percent as strong as on Earth's surface.
  3. About how long does the space station take to go once around Earth? About 90 minutes. The station goes around Earth about every 90 minutes.
  4. How many sunrises do astronauts on the station see in one day? 16. Going around Earth 16 times in 24 hours means 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets.
  5. How many people usually live on the space station? Usually seven. Usually seven people from around the world live on board.
  6. Since when have people lived on the space station all the time? Since November 2000. Someone has lived on the station all the time since November 2000.
  7. How much do astronauts on the station exercise? At least two hours a day. Astronauts work out at least two hours every day.
  8. Why do astronauts exercise so much in space? Muscles and bones that don't hold you up get weaker. Floating means your body isn't holding you up, so muscles and bones weaken unless you exercise.
  9. About how long is the space station? About as long as a football field. NASA says it is one yard short of a whole American football field, end zones included.
  10. How many space agencies work together on the station? Five, from 15 countries. Five space agencies from 15 countries work on it together.
