What's in the sky tonight?
Sky Tonight: the Moon, the planets and shooting stars from your ZIP.
Tonight, anywhere in the US
Waning gibbous Moon, 70% lit; it rises late, so the evening sky is dark.
Saturn is bright in the east.
Next shower: the Southern Taurids, in 5 nights (quiet).
“To measure the sky, hold your arm out straight and make a fist. One fist is about ten degrees.”
How Sky Tonight works
Every time, direction and Moon shape here was worked out ahead of time with astronomy-engine, a free astronomy library, for each 5° square of the country and every night from November 2026 to December 2027. Your phone reads the first three numbers of your ZIP, picks the square, and shows that night. That is why the times say “about”: they are right for the middle of the square, give or take ten minutes.
One fist held out at arm's length covers about 10° of sky, so “four fists up” means four fists stacked from the horizon. A planet is usually the brightest point that does not twinkle much. If the sky is cloudy, the card can't see through it either.
