How the lessons work

The old stories teach by what happens, not by a speech at the end, and Peabody tells them that way. The lesson line in the table is a plain one-sentence reading of each story, written for the grown-up. It is on each story's page under "What it teaches", and it is not shown in the reader while a child is reading.

Talking about a story

A story can teach more than one thing, so the line is one way to read it. Ask your child what they think happened and why before you show the lesson, and see whether they find the same one, or a better one. The fables are the shortest to talk about, and they have the plainest lessons.

Questions parents ask

What is a moral story?

A moral story is a short story that shows how to act well, usually through what happens to its characters. Fables, many fairy tales and some legends are moral stories, and the lesson is often the point of telling them.

Is the one-line lesson the only way to read the story?

No. It is one plain reading, and a talk with your child afterwards is worth more than the line. Each story's page shows it under "What it teaches".

Do the stories cost anything?

No. Every story on this page is free to read through the end of 2026, with no account and no card.
