For grown-ups

Tidying goes faster when there is something to watch. Set five minutes and a gorilla eats his pizza slice by slice while your child puts things away; the slices are the time, so a child who cannot read a clock still knows how much is left.

Tips for grown-ups

  • Give one small job per slice: books on the shelf, cars in the box, clothes in the basket.
  • Count up instead if racing a clock feels stressful: the pizza is built slice by slice and the job is done when it is whole.
  • Use Take turns for two children sharing a room: each animal gets a few minutes in charge of choosing what goes away next.
  • Five minutes is a good start for little ones. Make it longer with + as their stamina grows.
  • Let them pick the picture. A child who chose the popcorn pot wants to see it pop.

Questions

What is a good clean up time for a young child?

Short and regular works better than long and rare. Two to five minutes suits most preschoolers; older children can manage ten or fifteen. You know your child best.

Can it count up instead of down?

Yes. Choose Count up and the picture fills instead of emptying. Some children find that friendlier: they are building something, not losing something.

Does it make a noise at the end?

Each picture has its own short, silly sound (the gorilla burps). Turn it down, or off, in Sound and more.

Is it free?

Yes. No ads, no sign-up, nothing to download.
