For grown-ups

A First / Then board shows a child two things: what to do now, and the good thing that comes after. Pick the two pictures, set how long each takes, and the board runs the first with an animated timer, then celebrates and moves on to the second.

Tips for grown-ups

  • Put the less-loved thing first and the looked-forward-to thing second.
  • Keep the first step short, especially at the start.
  • Change either step from the cards: First toys away, then play. First homework, then a snack.
  • Say it out loud together as you start: 'First teeth, then story.'
  • Add steps and it becomes a full routine.

Questions

What is a First / Then board?

A simple visual support: a picture of what happens first and what happens next. They are widely used with young children and by many families of autistic children; this is a simple free tool, not a clinical one.

Does the second step need a timer?

Every step has one, so a story or a game also has a clear end. Make it as long as you like.

Can I print it?

Not yet; it runs on screen, on a phone, tablet or classroom board.

Is it free?

Yes. No ads, no sign-up, nothing to download.
